"Drug free therapy for pain free horses!"
Wise Dan, Horse of the Year
Since its early inception, Kinesiology taping practices for the human athlete has demonstrated successful use in rehabilitation, prevention and training. Recently, kinesio taping has gained popularity through its widespread exposure during the 2012 Summer Olympics and has become a mainstream modality used by professional human athletes and health care professionals. Inevitably, its success in the world of human athletics has transitioned into the equine community.
The mechanism by which equine kinesio tape affects the body is completely different from that of non-elastic athletic tape and can often times be confusing. The effect of kinesio tape is based on its ability to interact with the skin and associated neurosensory and mechanoreceptors. Unlike traditional methods of taping, elastic kinesio tape does not compress the tissue-it decompresses the tissue allowing for increased circulation. Kinesio tape facilitates movement by recoiling muscles and supporting joints. It is also helpful to facilitate lymph drainage of hematomas or swollen joints. Kinesio taping is also very useful in supporting previously injured tendons/ligaments/muscles when the horse is coming back into work. We use only Equi-Tape Kinesio tape.
Kinesio taping can be used during exercise, under saddle or at rest and can stay on up to 4 days.
